Anthony from PBS News Student Reporting Labs here, a hands-on video and audio journalism training program that connects young people to real-world experiences and their educators to tools, resources, and community.
Writing to let you know that we’re hosting two (free!!) in-person training opportunities with our team this summer in the DC area. More below. These are open to students and educators nationwide — please share with any high school students and educators in your networks who may be interested. We’re hoping to cast a wide net!
SRL Teacher Workshop 2025: Free educator professional development with PBS News Student Reporting Labs this July
Join PBS News Student Reporting Labs staff July 25-27 for an immersive weekend at WETA/PBS News headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, where educators will explore video and audio journalism tactics, tools, and resources. In addition to foundational skills, this program will also focus on practical strategies for teachers to help students organize their content, refine their creative process, and produce compelling narratives efficiently. This is a free professional development opportunity — and Student Reporting Labs will cover lodging, meals, and offer up to $250 in travel stipends. Space is limited: learn more and apply here.
Calling high school student journalists! Spend a week reporting in DC with PBS News Student Reporting Labs this June
Report stories with high school student journalists from across the country at the PBS News SRL Summer Academy, a free, all-expenses paid week of journalism training and hands-on reporting experience with the PBS News Student Reporting Labs staff. This year’s program will be held just outside of Washington D.C. from June 22-28. All expenses are covered for students, including travel, lodging, and more. Lodging and training will take place at George Mason University. Space is limited. Learn more and apply here by April 27.
Outside of these in-person programs, we also offer year-round opportunities for mentorship and publication. Learn more about how to work with us here, and check out our free tutorials, lesson plans, and prompts on our resource platform StoryMaker. Our story pitch deadline for this school year is March 31.
